BALTIMORE (WBFF)-- FOX45 Morning News was live at the University of Maryland Christmas tree fire safety demonstration.

Christmas tree fires are four times more deadly than the average home fire.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), U.S. fire departments respond to an annual average of 210 home structure fires that begin with Christmas trees.

These fires cause an annual average of six civilian deaths, 16 civilian injuries, and $16.2 million in direct property damages.

One out of every 34 reported home Christmas tree fires resulted in a death, compared to an average of one death per 142 total reported home fires.

The experiments were designed and conducted by Dr. Isaac Leventon, a Department of Fire Protection Engineering alumnus and Postdoctoral Research Associate with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Fire Research Division.
