Hot Gay Time Machine review: Bubbling with creativity and sparing no blushes

What comes after Six? Seven, perhaps? No! It is with this self-billed "cabaret comedy extravaGAYnza" that Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss follow up their five-star smash-hit musical about the unfortunate spouses of Henry VIII.

Take good note of the age guidance of 18+: Marlow and co-performer/writer Zak Ghazi-Torbati are not going to spare the details or the blushes. ‘We love to look at cocks in the locker room’ is not a refrain you’re likely to hear elsewhere this festive season.

Moss’s production is a high-camp free-for-all from the start and the energy levels throughout the 75 minutes remain unfaultably stratospheric. This is a loose retrospective of key moments in Marlow and Ghazi-Torbati’s lives as young gay men, set to witty original compositions by Marlow, who proves himself a talented pianist and fearsomely exuberant dancer in his tiny pink shorts.

There are fleeting glimpses of real poignancy, but there’s little time for introspection when there are life-sized cut-outs of Beyoncé to grapple with. To say nothing of the aforementioned situation in the school changing rooms.

I’m not the target audience for this show, but it confirms Marlow and Moss are bubbling with creativity. Let’s just hope that this talented pair channels it as fruitfully as possible.
