Saul Feldberg, 87, Founder of Global Furniture Group
Contract furniture industry icon and Global furniture group founder Saul Feldberg passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023, surrounded by his family. He was 87.

Saul was born in Poland and immigrated to Canada in 1953. He and his wife Toby founded The Global Furniture Group in 1966 and Teknion Corp in 1983 and built them into worldwide leaders in office and institutional furniture. In addition, Saul founded The Milestone Group in 1989 and made it a leader in the commercial, industrial and retail property management sector.

After starting in a small furniture business sweeping floors, he ended up running the operations at a young age. He started Global with a couple of employees and grew the business step by step with a diverse group of people who surrounded Saul with love, respect, and loyalty.

Saul embedded the companies with a strong sense of values, including treating all with respect, hard work, and determination, acting quickly and decisively, and continuously improving and driving forward. He was awarded the Order of Canada in 2018.

Saul believed in giving back to society with countless philanthropic activities in many areas. His generosity was endless. He had an unsurpassed love of Israel and invested heavily in all aspects of Israeli life. Saul knew that success was more than financial success. His passion and devotion to his family and friends leave a legacy for generations.

Mr. Feldberg is survived by his wife, Toby, as well as their four children, Janice, David, Joel, and Bernie.
Allsteel Inc. announced last week the move of its Muscatine, IA sales office and showroom to the brand's new Experience Center in Fulton Market in Chicago. With this move, Allsteel will close its facility on the HNI campus. No jobs will be affected with this move, which will take place this spring.
Herman Miller is continuing to increase the use of ocean-bound plastic within the modern furniture maker's portfolio. The Sayl Chair, designed by Swiss Designer Yves Béhar will now include up to 1.36 kg (3 pounds) of mismanaged plastic waste found near waterways.
An auction for hundreds of items at Twitter's San Francisco HQ has just ended. A statue of the platform's famous bird logo has claimed the most expensive item sold, coming in at $100,000 (£81,000). Viewers online noted that some of the used items were no bargain, as they were selling for more than retail.
Newer buildings have almost always come at a premium to older stock. But the gap is widening at an accelerating rate due to companies hunting for sustainably designed buildings and high quality amenities.

While the global office vacancy rate increased 20 basis points to 14.5% in the third quarter of 2022, high-quality space is showing the greatest resilience, according to JLL.

For example, in the U.S., occupancy of new offices has remained steady for over a year (peaking at 16.6% vacancy in Q4 2021) even with new stock being built. Meanwhile, older buildings have been thinning out, with a pre-COVID vacancy of 13.5% rising to 19% in Q3 2022.

Now you can buy mattresses on Amazon. Direct-to-consumer brands are selling on Amazon. There’s also a range of marketplace-only brands there now. That speaks to a larger trend: Consumers are seeing it, brands are seeing it, and it will continue.
Google's parent company, Alphabet, is the latest tech giant to announce a mass layoff. The California-based firm plans to cut 12,000 jobs, the largest layoff in company history, according to The New York Times. Like other tech firms, the reduction comes after Alphabet embarked on a hiring spree during the pandemic but is now forced to cut costs amid the threat of a rising recession.
Microsoft has announced it will lay off 10,000 employees by the end of the third quarter, the latest sign of tech giants shrinking in the face of economic challenges.

The Redmond, Washington-based tech giant, in a memo to employees filed Wednesday with the Securities and Exchange Commission, said it would incur a $1.2B charge due to consolidation on its next earnings report. It cited lease consolidation and severance costs among the reasons for the loss, but didn't reveal how much real estate it would cut.

Despite persistent economic worries, the hiring market remains buoyant heading into 2023, according to a new study by a leading job search site. Monster’s latest Work Watch Report indicates that more than 9 in 10 U.S. businesses plan to onboard new employees this year, and regardless of widespread fears of a recession, most recruiters say they are either confident (44%) or very confident (55%) in finding the right candidate to fill the job.
WeWork announced that it will eliminate 300 jobs globally in an effort to cut costs, primarily focusing on underperforming locations.

ULTRAFABRICS LAUNCHES THE AWAKENING PALETTE
The world’s finest performance fabric imagines the future of interior spaces using Pantone’s Color of the Year as inspiration

ULTRAFABRICS, the world’s leading producer of high-quality performance fabrics, has applied its new Awakening palette, inspired by its Color of the Year collaboration with PANTONE, to the future workplace, demonstrating how color can impact any interiors space.

The Awakening palette incorporates the use of PANTONE 18-750 Viva Magenta and marries it with colors that are found in nature. Each of the colors in this collaborative palette represents the elements: air, earth, water, and fire, bringing the happiness, joy, and energy of the outdoors, in.

Kimberle Frost, resident color specialist at Ultrafabrics, says: “The idea behind the palette is to inspire designers. We want them to think a little differently about ways to approach bold colors like Viva Magenta. It’s a collection of eight readily available Ultrafabrics products that are closely matched Pantone shades. They combine the beauty of warm, grounded neutrals with harmonious colors found in nature, and they’re all tied around Viva Magenta, which gives this palette a vibrancy and energy. It’s a tool for designers to inspire them with new ways to use color in different applications, in real-life. Calling it ‘Awakening’ feels appropriate given that we have come out of a pandemic and we’ll soon be emerging from winter hibernation. It's about a moment when we're suddenly aware and ready to reset.”

AWAKENING THE MODERN WORKPLACE
Viva Magenta takes centre stage in the beautiful workspace renders designed by stylist Olly Mason and brought to life by rendering artists, jformento. It is a clean and refined space with comforting but sleek modular elements; the use of biophilic design oxygenates and invigorates the environment and provides a warming contrast to the future-forward 3D-printed concrete elements.

Trees and plants, as incorporated here, have been proven to contribute to workers’ wellbeing, happiness, and productivity. There is also plenty of natural light from the glass ceiling to lighten up the space; it has the added benefit of casting peaceful shadows and the allusion of movement reflected from the planting.

The Viva Magenta wall, covered in Ultrafabrics’ new Vivid Punch shade, now available in its Uf Select Montage collection, shows a boost of enlivening color, but this divider of the airy space also doubles as a booth where people can work, collaborate or socialize.

Using white and brown materials on modular furniture grounds the space in earthiness, while rounded, organic sofas covered in Ultrafabrics’ green Volar Bio fabric complement the planting and reflect the outside greenery, thus harmonizing the interior and exterior elements of the building.

“We will be using the Awakening palette to explore various spaces for 2023,” says Director of Branding, Nicole Meier. “Viva Magenta is a starting point and Awakening takes it further, into real-world applications. We want to create future-forward, transformative spaces using these colors.”

Barry Silverman, Vice President of Marketing and Branding at Ultrafabrics, says: “The Pantone Color of the Year is a critical driver of design. Together with Pantone, we’re looking forward to helping designers bring cultural timeliness to timeless design. The collaboration will help the design industry connect to the color zeitgeist in a sustainable and enduring way.”

Ultrafabrics will deepen its collaboration with Pantone throughout 2023 in a series of co-branded global, interactive events, sharing their expertise on how color can be implemented in almost any type of space and into Viva Magenta’s application possibilities across the world of interiors.

“We are excited to work with Ultrafabrics to explore the application of the Pantone Color of the Year in interior design and beyond,” says Elley Cheng, Vice President and General Manager of Pantone.

Ultrafabrics’ special edition color, Vivid Punch, is now available within its collections UF Select Montage collection. The shade can also be custom developed across its portfolio including, Brisa, Ultraleather and its bio-based fabric, Volar Bio.

Thinking of Buying or Selling Your Company?

MMQB recently sat down with Stephen Viscusi, CEO of the Viscusi Group, an executive search firm specializing in the interior furnishings industry, to discuss a new venture he has launched. Viscusi's new consulting business is born from decades of work in the contract furnishings industry.

What Is Viscusi Advisors, and what made you expand The Viscusi Group services?

"I created Viscusi Advisors as a consulting company for private equity and other companies, such as manufacturers and dealers interested in acquiring or selling businesses in the interiors industry."

What Are you Offering Clients?

"As the founder of The Viscusi Group executive search firm, I have unique long-term relationships with company owners, CEOs, and their Boards that I'm willing to share with investors seeking to acquire specific companies or sell companies that they already own. My client could be a private equity company, manufacturer, dealer, or retailer wanting to buy or sell a company. I have seen a trend in our search business in the past couple of years. We were increasingly selling searches to private equity companies who acquired companies in the interiors space. At Viscusi Advisors, these same people have asked me to use my personal relationships to introduce them to manufacturers, dealers, and other important players in the industry. A traditional business broker or banker does not have the level of trust or contacts in our industry that I have earned over the years. The formation of Viscusi Advisors happened very organically."

Are you a business broker?

"No, I'm not a business broker, or an investment banker, simply an advisor. I keep our fee low for that reason. We charge a modest 1% fee of the ultimate transaction. We are not Lehman Brothers - we ask questions, make suitable introductions, and provide advice, and the fee reflects that. We work along with bankers and brokers to close deals."

What's unique about Viscusi Advisors is that I can provide insight into the personalities my client will be negotiating with, which may help both parties succeed in the ultimate sale or acquisition.

Who are your clients so far?

SV: "I have learned from my search business that everything is confidential, which is even more true for the Advisors' business. There is a Non-Disclosure Agreement in place before any conversation or exchange of documents. It is always private and confidential if someone wants to sell their company or even explore the possibility."

But lots of PE firms and business owners have called. It's a good mix: Contract but especially residential manufacturers that want to sell. The mix includes healthcare, hospitality, flooring, tiles and stone, textiles, furniture, and outdoor. Plus retail, "to the trade," and traditional contract dealers. You name the business, and chances are they have made contact.

But you still do head-hunting? The Viscusi Group must be one of the largest in our industry.

SV: "The Viscusi Group remains the same; a traditional search and consulting practice. Yes, headhunters, as you call it, and I am not ashamed of the word. I do not know if we are one of the "largest" recruiters that specialize in the industry, but we are certainly one of the best known, and as a result, candidates we cold call for jobs return our calls. Good people, from the C-Suite to the sales rep, are not typically out looking or reading LinkedIn help wanted ads, so we recruit these people for our clients, and because we are well known, we can make hires happen faster. Then, every hire is contractually backed up with a full Year Free Replacement Guarantee, meaning, if someone hired through The Viscusi Group quits or is fired within one year of their start date, we will replace them for free."

Many organizations have been exploring workplace design solutions that can attract employees back to the office. However, an amazing physical space alone can’t achieve that. Strategic employee or company-led programs, tools that help employees to connect and care for themselves, well-communicated protocols, and authentically operationalized company cultures and values are now key ingredients that can unlock the potentials of physical space and turn it into a meaningful part of employees’ work-life landscape. We’ve surveyed our clients to understand what makes a productive and happy workplace.
A poll from the latest Bupa Global Executive Wellbeing Index suggests that over a third (35 percent) of UK business leaders feel implementing hybrid working has brought greater productivity to their organisations. Over a quarter (29 percent) of UK executives said they had now embraced the benefits of hybrid working despite being previously dubious about the practice, with more than two-fifths (44 percent) saying they personally enjoy the flexibility of a hybrid workplace. Overall, over a third of UK business leaders (35 percent) agreed that working from home increases productivity.

Designer Dan Sullivan wants to change your brain. When people work together, great ideas are born and connections are made. People learn from one another. And project progress happens faster. As technology has expanded our ability to work from anywhere—including home—we increasingly seek out opportunities to collaborate and connect face-to-face with our teams.

Trends

Work-from-home during the pandemic led to two simultaneous realizations: technology allows people to work from anywhere and the physical workplace matters more than ever. Will people go back to the office? Absolutely. Will they go back to the same office? Not a chance.
As companies continue to adapt to this new world and transform their offices into experience-driven hubs, there is one type of workplace that has consistently offered and promoted more flexibility over the last two decades: the co-working space.

In nature, the Finch is truly a thing to behold and it's no surprise that Byrne's own is just as lovely. Driven by the company's Powerful Design philosophy that products can - and should - be as beautiful as they are functional, Finch is at once smart and sophisticated. Like its feathered namesake, this Finch perches happily on the edge of any desktop or just below the surface. Compact, but undeniably mighty, power comes standard in a 5- port or 3-port option. And for a bit of that Byrne magic – the 5-port allows users to plug in from both sides.
The trend of furniture designed with soft volumes that we've been seeing throughout the past year doesn't show any sign of moving on just yet. The aesthetic even translates beautifully to the contract world, case in point is the Oru collection.

I'm not 100% sold on the aesthetics (I'm 90% of the way there), but I find this Lightcycle Morph lamp by Dyson to be a very intelligent design. Although it resembles a task lamp, it is far more flexible, offering four lighting configurations: Task... ..."feature"... ...indirect... ...and ambient.

A few bumps in the road are to be expected for any new business owner.

But what siblings Tyler Davis and Jessica Easterla encountered when they took over Tampa-based Commercial Design Services went well beyond the typical growing pains. They began running the business, founded by their father, Stewart Davis, during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The transition was part of a succession plan several years in the making for Commercial Design Services, whose services include space planning and furniture selection. Stewart Davis, who started the firm in 1988, was ready to retire. He still holds the CEO title but serves mainly in an advisory role and no longer maintains an ownership stake.

When Marriott International and Gensler joined forces over seven years ago to reimagine the company’s global headquarters, neither assumed the new facility would open on the heels of a global pandemic. We watched many projects go pencils down as this one pushed ahead. As a pillar of the hospitality industry for more than 95 years, Marriott approached the project convinced of design’s power to move the needle on the human experience. One way to do this was to develop a design strategy that fused hospitality and workplace.
