Nb. 12 - December 19th, 2024 - On the threshold of the new year!

On a quarterly basis, “Focus on our Platforms” has shared with you 43  highlights from the life of our platforms over the past year. Now is the perfect time to take a look in the rear-view mirror!
2024 in a few words ...
    - new equipment: we presented 8 facilities acquired thanks to Wallonia's Plan de Relance or the FNRS's call for Infrastructure & Large equipment;
    - testimonials: 5 companies - Elia, Farm for Good, GSK, Isomatex and VOCSens - shared their experiences of working with the CREDEM, FERM, SMCS, P2C and WINFAB technology platforms;
   - 1 project leader for the development of a common equipment management system: the tool is currently being deployed and has already been adopted by 4 platforms and 1 other UCLouvain entity;
   - platform creations: 3 new platforms have finalized their internal rules and regulations and are undergoing the necessary administrative procedures to obtain approval from the UCLouvain Academic Council;
   - training courses: among the wide variety of offers, we highlighted 4 organized by SMCS and CISM;
   - a LEAF Bronze label for 2 platforms, underlining their commitment to more sustainable management of their activities;
   - 2 anniversaries: the SEFY platform celebrated its 10th anniversary and CISM its 20th!
Finally, let's not forget the renewed support from UCLouvain authorities for the platforms through the extension of the coordination position.

What about 2025?

UCLouvain will celebrate its 600th anniversary. As far as platforms are concerned, we're looking forward to the large-scale development of the common equipment management system, a focus on each of the three Excellence platforms from the Plan de Relance, and a few other projects that you'll discover in future editions!

In the meantime, for this final issue of 2024, we invite you to discover some of the equipment recently deployed within the ASM and LAS&O platforms, the winter school organized by SMCS on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Python, a study on memory, a new LEAF-labeled platform, the 20th anniversary of CISM and the people recently confirmed in their positions or newly hired within the platforms.

We wish you a smooth transition from 2024 to 2025 and a warm holiday season!

New equipment
Financed by the Wallonia's Plan de Relance

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to detect, identify and quantify a wide range of organic and inorganic molecules, polymers as well as supramolecular and biological systems
The ASM platform has just acquired two new NMR spectrometers
   - a 400 MHz Jeol JNM-ECZL (opposite - Photo credit: ASM), an indispensable analysis tool for all routine research activities and teaching laboratories;
   - a 600 MHz Jeol JNM-ECZL600G, mainly dedicated to more advanced analyses.
More versatile than the instruments of the old generation, it will allow measurements to be carried out on liquid and solid samples at variable temperatures.

Characterization of molecules from small to large molecular mass?
To boost research in the fields of chemistry, biology and materials science, a new high-resolution mass spectrometer (HRMS) coupled with an Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography (UPLC) has just been installed within the ASM platform.

The LAS&O platform has just acquired a new frequency comb
This device will be used to determine the frequency of lasers emitting in the near infrared with the precision of atomic clocks, for various metrological applications such as measuring the spectral signatures of molecules of astrophysical interest.

A delegation from Giga platforms at UCLouvain
On Friday November 29, UCLouvain's health sector platforms welcomed a delegation from the Giga (ULiège) platforms, composed of Carine Bebrone, Sandra Ormenese, Alice Mayer and Chantal Humblet.

A new LEAF label for a platform
On September 24, the IREC animal facility was awarded bronze accreditation by LEAF (Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework), which develops standards for sustainable development in research laboratories.
The Animalerie team is delighted with this recognition of the commitment of every member of staff to improving the ecological footprint of its activities.

Welcome!
Nearly 300 people are working on a daily basis within the UCLouvain platforms. Discover those who have joined this community in the last 3 months!

Elisa de Jacquier de Rozée has been appointed Director of MuséeL, and confirmed in her position as Operational Manager of the MUSE platform.
She has been involved with the Museum since 2001, and has held this position ad interim since July 2023.

Valérie Dormal, the CICN's operational manager, was appointed Research Logistician on November 1. This position, to which all 3 sectors of UCLouvain contributed, is a first for the platform and guarantees long-term stability.

Pieter Heremans joined the CISM team last August.
As a computer scientist, Pieter will be working within the framework of the Consortium des Équipements de Calcul Intensif (CECI), of which CISM is a member.

Guillaume Piron joined the LEMSC team in October as a test engineer.
As civil engineer, Guillaume will monitor and manage various tests in the laboratory. He will also prospect and draw up the specifications for the purchase of a new high-capacity machine (5000 kN).

In October, SMCS welcomed a new member to its team: Antoine Vanbeneden.

With a doctorate in psychology from UCLouvain, Antoine joins the platform as a statistical consultant.
