Steelcase Reports First Quarter Fiscal 2025 Orders Climb, Sales Fall

Steelcase Inc. reported a growth in orders of 8% compared to the previous year, with a 10% increase in the Americas. This growth was primarily driven by large corporate customers and the education sector. Despite a 3% decline in revenue in both the Americas and International sectors, the company's operating income improved by $10 million, largely due to international operations.

The company's first-quarter revenue was reported at $727.3 million, with a net income of $10.9 million. The adjusted earnings per share amounted to $0.16. Operating income for the first quarter was $17.6 million, an increase of $10.3 million from the previous year, while adjusted operating income was $28.2 million, an increase of $8.5 million.

Looking ahead, the company's backlog at the end of the first quarter was approximately $764 million, a 1% increase from the previous year. The projected revenue for the second quarter of fiscal 2025 is expected to be in the range of $850 to $875 million. In terms of earnings per share, the company expects to report between $0.33 to $0.37 for the second quarter of fiscal 2025 and adjusted earnings per share of between $0.36 to $0.40.

Hooker Furnishings Positions Itself for Contract & Hospitality Growth; Dean Jarrett Appointed President of Contract Brands
Hooker Furnishings is positioning itself for growth in the contract and hospitality market by bringing together its H Contract and Samuel Lawrence Hospitality (SLH) brands under the leadership of Dean Jarrett, who has been appointed as President-Contract Brands. This organizational change aims to support the company's organic growth initiatives and create synergies in sales, operations, marketing, and manufacturing.

“The contract market represents tremendous revenue potential for the company. The hotels and resorts served by SLH are working to refresh their properties and expand their footprints as consumers and business travelers return post-COVID and the senior living market addressed by H Contract is expected to further expand to meet the needs of the aging Baby Boomers,” said Anne Smith, Chief Administrative Officer of Hooker Furnishings. “Having a common leadership approach will provide greater opportunities for both of these business units to meet our aggressive growth goals moving forward.

The company has also announced key leaders for SLH, including Charles Myrick as Vice President of Operations, Erin Stone as Vice President of Market Development, and David Sullivan as Senior Vice President of Sales. These appointments are designed to leverage market growth opportunities and enhance the company's position in the market.

According to a study from Stanford University, the increase in remote work has led to longer commutes for Americans. The share of "super-commutes" of 75 miles or longer has risen by nearly a third since the start of the pandemic. Employees who no longer have to commute to the office every day are willing to tolerate longer commutes once or twice a week for a higher standard of living further away. This trend is driven by remote and hybrid work arrangements, and rising housing costs are also pushing people to relocate further from city centers.
Energy company consolidations in Houston are expected to increase office vacancy rates. Last year saw a significant amount of oil and gas company consolidations, and this trend is likely to continue. The consolidation will lead to layoffs and increased sublease space in the market. While mergers and acquisitions have been a common occurrence in the industry, last year's activity was particularly notable. Technology advancements and efficiencies are also impacting how energy companies use office space. Despite the downsides, Houston will remain a significant hub for energy research and activity.
The rising cost of capital and uncertain future demand have led to a decline in office construction activity. Only 3.5 million square feet of new office construction is underway, indicating a record low for the third consecutive quarter. While the pullback is widespread, some markets like San Jose and Austin have seen a surge in construction due to demand from technology companies. Office vacancy rates have increased in San Jose and Austin, while other markets have experienced a slowdown in office completions. Recent office construction has focused on specialty use by life sciences research and development organizations, particularly in biotech hubs like Boston and San Diego.

Workplace News

To entice workers back to the office, some firms are offering employees their own dedicated desks, recognizing the comfort and sense of control that comes with having a personalized workspace. The trend of hot desking or hoteling, where workers do not have a permanent desk, has faced criticism for hygiene concerns and the lack of personalized spaces. Companies like Salesforce Inc. are now shifting towards assigned desks to encourage more in-office time. The ratio of people to desks has been increasing in hybrid offices, with companies embracing dedicated desking. The pandemic has highlighted the importance of having a comfortable and personalized workspace, and employers are looking to remove barriers to working in the office.
Stellantis, the parent company of Jeep and Chrysler, is calling its auto engineers back to the office after initially implementing remote work policies. The company believes that engineering vehicles requires in-person collaboration and design sessions. Stellantis had previously launched a hybrid work initiative but has now made remote work permanent only for non-assembly line employees. This decision aligns them more closely with General Motors' requirements for in-person work.
Dell Technologies is facing backlash from employees over its return-to-office (RTO) policy, which requires employees to choose between hybrid or remote work. Those who choose remote work are not eligible for promotions. Nearly half of Dell's U.S. workforce has opted for remote work, citing personal and financial benefits. This raises concerns about employee retention and satisfaction, highlighting the ongoing debate between work-life preferences and company culture in the post-pandemic world.
According to a Newsweek poll, Gen Z (those born between 1997 and 2012) is considered the most difficult generation to work with by 40% of respondents. The poll also revealed varying opinions among different generations regarding the hardest generation to manage in the workplace. Understanding and addressing Gen Z's challenges can lead to more productive and retentive work environments.
A new poll reveals that two-thirds of fully remote workers suffer from "productivity anxiety," with feelings of inadequacy or pressure to perform constantly or frequently. In-office workers report the least amount of productivity anxiety and higher levels of motivation. Recognition for their work and frequent feedback are identified as effective ways to alleviate productivity anxiety. The survey highlights the need for companies to reassess their well-being initiatives and consider more flexible options like hybrid working.
A survey shows that 42% of European job seekers would reject a job offer without hybrid or remote work options, with the demand even higher in Ireland at 47%. Other priorities for job seekers include environmental/sustainability initiatives and mental health/well-being benefits. Job security, work-life balance, and financial compensation are also important factors. Employers need to adapt their work environments to attract and retain top talent by offering flexible options and aligning with employee preferences.
A new poll suggests that the majority of workers who have shifted to a hybrid working model have experienced a significant reduction in burnout symptoms. The survey shows that 75% of respondents reported a dramatic decrease in burnout since adopting a hybrid model, leading to improvements in work-life balance, physical health, and overall wellbeing. Additionally, workers reported increased productivity, motivation, and job satisfaction in a hybrid work environment.
Flexible work models, such as hybrid and remote work, offer benefits like work-life balance, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and improved communication and collaboration. However, organizations must address challenges such as supporting middle managers, tailoring policies to fit diverse work roles, and investing in productivity-enhancing digital tools. Leading by example, taking an evolutionary approach, and recognizing employee successes are crucial for the success of hybrid work models.
Managers are failing with hybrid work due to a lack of trust in employees. The shift to hybrid work has highlighted persistent management failures rooted in distrust and micromanagement. Effective leadership should focus on clear communication, hiring great talent, and trusting employees to perform without excessive oversight. The pandemic may have been the catalyst for promoting a more human-centric management approach that emphasizes flexibility and employee autonomy.

Trends

Workplace design is increasingly drawing inspiration from college campuses, emphasizing multimodality, hybridity, community, and campus life. Gensler's research identified six learning modes: acquire, collaborate, convey, reflect, experience, and socialize, which are now being integrated into the workplace. Hybrid learning and working models are becoming the norm, with a preference for in-person experiences. The importance of community and socializing is being recognized in office design, particularly for Gen Z employees. Lastly, offices are becoming more like campuses, with diverse workspaces and amenities that support various modes of work and promote a sense of community.
The future of work will be personalized, with a focus on collaboration, personalization, and technology. HP's hybrid work model emphasizes collaboration and personalization, transforming traditional office setups into collaborative hubs. Personalization extends to work environment needs, fostering inclusivity. Addressing cognitive biases and resistance to change is crucial for successful transitions. Technology serves as the enabler, facilitating seamless communication and collaboration. Looking ahead, the future of work will integrate sustainability and circularity. Understanding cognitive biases such as status quo bias and loss aversion is important in navigating workplace changes. Embracing change and adapting to a personalized work experience is key in this evolving landscape.
Haworth DesignLab continues its focus on sustainability and circular design with the debut of Smokestack Unit 001, Understory, and PLAY STATION at NeoCon. These concepts by talented designers highlight Haworth's commitment to innovation and craftsmanship. Smokestack Unit 001 is a bench made from molded pigmented sawdust, PLAY STATION is a communal seating structure made from salvaged materials, and Understory features screens and organic stools made from sustainable materials. These concepts challenge expectations and set a new standard for workspaces.

Design

Incorporating immersive and interactive elements inspired by museums and exhibit design can enhance workplace design and create engaging and enjoyable experiences for employees. These experiences can foster communication, connection, and a sense of purpose, leading to increased employee engagement, well-being, and productivity. Companies can explore various immersive options, such as virtual reality, augmented reality, sound and light applications, and gamification, to create unique and branded experiences. Implementing these elements strategically throughout the workspace can create a sense of wonder and community, sparking creativity and transforming behaviors. Regular updates and refreshments of the exhibits can sustain curiosity and excitement among employees.

Green / Sustainability

Sam Pickering, Executive Director of Sustainability at The Instant Group, shares insights on achieving net zero goals in flexible workspaces. Key points include creating efficient, fully electrified spaces, addressing embodied carbon, using tools like the Sustainability Index for emissions reporting, and partnering with organizations like IWBI for certifications.
