Lee Heflebower of the Nebraska Coalition to End Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence began this session with an overview of the Domestic Violence Programs available in Nebraska. These programs offer a lifeline to survivors, while allowing them to stay safely in their homes if possible. A range of services are available including Homelessness Prevention, Emergency Shelters, Rapid Rehousing, Transitional Housing, and Supportive Services.
Next, Linda Olson of Bright Horizons spoke about the issues facing survivors in rural areas of northeastern Nebraska. The ability to house within the shelter is currently limited due to COVID, so they are using hotels to help fill the gaps. Linda reminded us about the complexities of abuse that can often be hard to see and how there are often many barriers preventing survivors from leaving.
Hilary Wasserburger from the DOVES Program in rural western Nebraska discussed the needs and risks of her clients. They are currently using hotels to house survivors due to a lack of shelters in the area. Hilary explained how the risk of homelessness and being homeless increases the risk of violence and that survivors have unique needs that require housing to be survivor-focused. She urged viewers to know and be familiar with their local domestic violence programs.
Leah Droge of Friendship Home, which serves the Lincoln area, was the final speaker. She spoke of the warnings signs of domestic abuse and how landlords can help by spotting the physical and property-related signs of violence. Leah helped to explain the specifics of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and how landlords can use it to help protect survivors, as well as the next steps to take.
