MillerKnoll Inc. reported results for the fourth quarter and full fiscal year 2024, highlighting that consolidated net sales for the fourth quarter fell by 7.1% year-over-year and decreased by 5.2% organically compared to the same period last year, amounting to $888.9 million. For the full fiscal year 2024, net sales were down by 11.2% year over year, amounting to $3.6 billion.
On the other hand, orders in the fourth quarter were slightly up 1.1% on a reported basis and up 2.9% organically from last year. This slow growth in orders was validated by a return to year-over-year order growth within the company's America's Contract segment. Despite the decrease in sales, the company reported significant year-over-year earnings per share growth in the fourth quarter and improved gross margin and operating margin both for the fourth quarter and the full fiscal year.
"Overall, we are optimistic about fiscal year 2025 as there is increased activity and interest in the contract space. Traffic at recent trade shows around the globe, including NeoCon in the U.S., Salone di Mobile in Italy, and 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen have improved and are close to pre-COVID levels. Also, negative trends in home sales are beginning to ease. The National Association of Realtors reported the year-over-year decline in existing home sales, including luxury homes, flattened in April. With a direct correlation between luxury home sales and demand for home furnishings, we are well positioned to benefit as this activity accelerates."
PARIC Holdings, a construction and design company, announced the acquisition of Corporate Concepts, a large contract furniture dealer based in Chicago. This acquisition will make Corporate Concepts part of PARIC's I3 Group, which also includes Interior Investments and Intereum. The three companies, all MillerKnoll Certified Dealers, will collectively form an innovation-focused, full-service provider with expertise in furnishings, walls, and audio-visual products. The unified company will focus on creating flexible, healthy, and inclusive work environments.
Corporate Concepts, known for its expertise in corporate headquarters and professional service organizations, will continue to operate under its current name for 90 days before joining the unified company. Ryan Zerante, Corporate Concepts' vice president of sales and operations, will serve as the executive vice president within I3 Group’s Illinois marketplace, ensuring continuity and dedication to excellence for Corporate Concepts' clients.

A supplier’s view on NeoCon 2024
In Chicago, MMQB had the opportunity to meet with Italian industry supplier Donati to get their take on NeoCon and developments in the office furniture sector.
Over the past 30 years, Donati has worked with virtually every leading office furniture manufacturer and brand in North America, and their team has been visiting NeoCon ever since. As a supplier to the industry, the company can't disclose specific product references, but on a tour of the Mart and Fulton Market, Donati's solutions were present in most customer showrooms, from mechanisms and chair bases to complete products.
"It's interesting to see the developments through the eyes of a supplier," says Stefano Ghidinelli, Vice President of Sales. "As we work with most North American manufacturers, we can observe at close quarters how the market is changing and how our customers are reacting to these developments. In the post-pandemic world, there are massive shifts in workplace concepts and the way brands present themselves. Space concepts are really the first thing you notice at Neocon and these changes are important to understand. However, we are product specialists and office seating remains our focus."

He underlines how home furniture categories have entered the workplace and how this has changed Donati's offering. "In recent years, we have added a stronger aesthetic element to our technical components. Our synchronized mechanisms are now concealed in elegant housings and our new chair frames have been designed by some of the best designers in the world. We have also gained a whole new category of customers from the residential and hospitality sectors."
Donati’s team notes how the workplace has become a hybrid of office, hospitality and residential typologies and that this has changed the character of office seating. Versatility and affordability seem to be leading the way, supported by the search for sustainable materials and usage concepts. “The office chair with full check-list functionality is still out there but the trend is clearly moving towards fewer, more intuitive functions combined with a softer design language. We see a lot of "hybrid" office chairs, very elegant, colorful and comfortable designs," explains Armando Donati, President and CEO of the company. “As a development partner, Donati always acts in the context of changing market demands. Our new chair components respond to such new requirements and evolving typologies of office chairs. In addition, we have built a catalogue for lounge seating.”

The Donati team also talks about their US-based manufacturing and logistics, which they visited earlier that week. “Our international presence follows the principle of local production. We don’t like to ship over long distances unnecessarily, so we produce where our components are used. It was a logical step to open a US subsidiary so we could serve our American clients better.”
At its facility in Holland, Michigan, Donati Industries handles production and just-in-time deliveries to US manufacturers. Hubs in North Carolina, Mississippi and Nevada provide logistics and customer service to regional clients.
Donati notes that the manufacturing landscape has changed as production has shifted from the U.S. to low-wage countries. "Even though many production lines have been moved to countries like Mexico, we will continue to focus on the US. We have no doubt that product development and high-quality production will remain in the country, and we have decided to invest in our local capacity."
With a growing number of injection-molding machines, Donati serves the local industry with components for office chairs and seat shells in a variety of materials and colors, including sustainable solutions with recycled or ocean-bound plastics. “The US market is one of our strategic growth areas. Donati is committed to establishing and growing its presence in the US. We have a long-term expansion plan that will take our local capabilities from injection-molding and value-added assembly to covering other capabilities Donati has in Europe or Asia. Already today, Donati Industries can offer all our components, development and logistics services by partnering with our overseas network.”
