Former Shingwauk Residential School Recognized as National Historic Site

On July 8, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Jonathan Wilkinson, announced the designation of the Former Shingwauk Indian Residential School as a national historic site under the National Program of Historical Commemoration. A formal commemoration ceremony will be scheduled at a later date based on consultation with the Children of Shingwauk Alumni Association (CSAA) and other stakeholders.  

Algoma University has recently partnered with the Canada Homestay Network (CHN) to support the needs of students on our Sault Ste. Marie and Brampton campuses. CHN, a not-for-profit society dedicated to facilitating intercultural connections through homestay accommodations, has placed more than 75,000 students in homestay across Canada since 1995.

Algoma University researchers in the School of Life Sciences and the Environment and the School of Computer Science and Technology, Dr. Nirosha Murugan and Dr. Yujie Tang, have received $315,000 in funding through the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada Discovery (NSERC) grant. NSERC funds visionaries, explorers and innovators who are searching for the scientific and technical breakthroughs that will benefit our country. Through their support, the scientific community can develop opportunities and attract new expertise to make Canada’s research community thrive.

The Shingwauk Reunions: Looking Back

Together, they’ll discuss the last forty years of sharing, healing, and learning done at the Shingwauk Gatherings, and what the future holds.
