Nb. 7 - September 21st, 2023 - Let's start a new academic year!

The UCLouvain's technology platforms have remained very active over the Summer. And the start of the academic year provides a nice opportunity to share this with you!

In terms of research
, platforms are working to ensure that companies and public bodies integrate extended reality (XR) into their activities, while others are contributing to medical advances by enabling Alzheimer's disease to be identified ante mortem.

Thanks to different fundings, they are also continuing to acquire new cutting-edge equipment (HDx-MS technology, 3rd generation sequencing), which enable them to develop research, collaborate with companies and show the political world the benefits of the subsidies granted.

In terms of training, the platforms offer a wide range of courses, from high performance computing to artificial intelligence and machine learning in Python, or even a Junior Data Analyst certification.

Finally, on the culture front, don't miss the invitation to discover the unsuspected artistic side of science, revealed by the beauty, poetry and mystery of the images captured on a daily basis by scientists, doctors and students using equipment provided by some platforms.

Enjoy your reading and we wish you all the best for the new academic year !

The platforms community

Do not hesitate to talk about this initiative and to relay it around so that an ever-growing public is informed of what is happening within the UCLouvain platforms!

Research and innovation

Strategic Innovation Initiative Human Interaction Technology Transfer : MiiL is responsible for developing the XR industrial ecosystem in Wallonia
On a practical level, the actions of MiiL and its partners will enable economic players (companies, (para)public bodies, etc.) to identify XR use cases in their field, to validate the technical and market feasibility (POC, POV), and to develop or participate in the development of XR products.

Media Innovation & Intelligibility Lab
Audiovisual production, new visual communication, digital device design and evaluation.

Proteomic & protein analysis by mass spectrometry
Scientific and technical advice for identification and quantification by mass spectrometry of proteins from complex samples.

Diagnosis Alzheimer's disease ante mortem
This is now possible thanks to mass spectrometry, the key facility of the MASSPROT platform.

... with new equipments ...

HDx-MS technology now available at MASSPROT (De Duve Institute - Woluwé site)
With the acquisition of a new instrument dedicated to deuterium-hydrogen exchange - funded by the Fondation Contre le Cancer -, the MASSPROT mass spectrometry platform is moving towards the study of protein structure.

"Under the skin - Micro art" exhibition : scientific imaging on show
Every day, scientists and doctors use cutting-edge equipment available within laboratories and technology platforms to capture the infinitely small, invisible to the naked eye. An opportunity to highlight it in a less conventional way.

Louvain-la-Neuve (Forum des Halles)
Vernissage on 7.11.2023 at 6pm

Welcome !

Nearly 300 people are working on a daily basis within the UCLouvain platforms. Discover those who have joined this community in the last 3 months!

Valérie Dormal has been coordinating the CICN platform since 1st July 2023.

Catherine Fesler, who has a degree in psychology, has been recruited by the CICN to coordinate studies related to the effects of saffron and other plants in regulating mood and improving well-being.

Now part of the LEMSC team, Noah Maton will focus on geotechnical projects, soil mechanics and on-site measurements.

At WINFAB, Nicolas André has joined the team as Research Logistician.
He will be in particular responsible for drafting research projects, monitoring R&D requests from companies, documenting manufacturing processes, maintaining equipment, supervising some students and developing the expertise of users (PhD researchers or post-docs) through training activities.
