December 13, 2024

Dear Readers,

I am pleased to share this special edition of the Research Roundup 2024 Year in Review, which highlights some of the most impactful research stories from the University of Maryland over the past year.

We had much to celebrate in 2024: We were named a top-10 university for entrepreneurship for the tenth consecutive year, climbed higher among the top 20 universities for research and development spending, and received the largest contract in the university’s history to support the Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and Security.

However, the success of a research enterprise is measured by much more than just awards and accolades. The Research Roundup strives to spotlight the breadth and depth of creative, innovative work happening all across our campus in so many different disciplines. Join me in looking back at some of the stories that made this past year such a memorable one. I hope they fill you with the same sense of pride and gratitude I feel about our world-class research program that is committed to addressing the world’s grand challenges.

Thank you for all you do to support University of Maryland research. I look forward to building on our progress in the new year.

Wishing you all a restful holiday break and a very happy 2025,

Gregory F. Ball
Vice President for Research
University of Maryland
