Join us on Wednesday, September 15, 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. EST for Finding a Living Donor: a peer-led interactive online workshop for kidney and liver transplant candidates and advocates, facilitated by Heather Badenoch, Candice Coghlan and Harvey Mysel.
Heather Badenoch says that the best decision she ever made was donating 22 per cent of her liver to a child she’s never met. As the Chief Strategist at Village PR, she advises not-for-profit clients in health, disability and community communications. An active transplant volunteer, Heather runs public appeals for living organ donors pro-bono and mentors potential donors on the path to living donation. She also volunteers with the Canadian Donation and Transplant Research Program (CDTRP), the Canadian Liver Foundation and the UHN Centre for Living Organ Donation. She and her husband adopt senior rescue dogs and volunteer together with Community Veterinary Outreach, a group providing free veterinary care to the pets of people who are homeless.
As a university student, Candice Coghlan crash started onto dialysis, and was diagnosed with end stage renal disease that put her life on hold, and disrupted her goals of travelling the world for humanitarian work. After a life-saving kidney transplant from her mother in 2009, Candice pursued her dreams as she directed a nonprofit organization, providing resources to orphans affected by HIV and AIDS in Lesotho, Africa. In 2018, she became the Provincial Coordinator for a research initiative called the Transplant Ambassador Program in partnership with the Ontario Renal Network and CanSOLVE CKD which introduced kidney donors and kidney transplant recipients to renal patients seeking guidance about different pathways for transplantation. Candice has worked with UCLA and Explore Transplant to educate patients about options surrounding transplant. Since 2008, through her work in the nonprofit sector, Candice has advocated passionately for the best quality healthcare for patients and their families, and continues to do so in her volunteer work. Thanks to her transplant, in February 2021, Candice and her husband, Mike, welcomed their first child, a healthy baby girl.
Harvey Mysel is the founder of LKDN (2007), a non-profit 501(c)3 whose primary mission is to educate people in need of a kidney transplant about living kidney donation and help them communicate their need to family members and friends. Harvey is a 2-time kidney transplant recipient. In addition to the work he does at the LKDN, Harvey is a tri-athlete, competing in a triathlon 5 months after his first transplant. He is a 3-time Gold Medal winner and Silver medalist in the Transplant Games. Harvey is an accomplished bicycle rider, tennis player, platform tennis player, bowler, hiker and rock climber.
