The webinar introduces a farm, wholesaler, and co-op that produce and distribute locally-sourced food. Their efforts promote healthy, organic, local food in Nebraska, and their products are available through subscriptions, local restaurants, and grocery stores.
Alex McKiernan of Robinette Farms began the session with details of his local farm where he and his family work together to produce crops year-round. Robinette Farms specializes in foods that require minimal processing, from tomatoes to greens and even livestock. The farm uses a combination of hoop houses, green houses, and traditional farming to help provide produce that is sold in farmers markets, restaurants, and directly to consumers.
Next was Justin Jones of Lone Tree Foods, a small produce wholesaler which buys from local producers and distributes their products locally. They carry a variety of produce, including milk and eggs, and work to connect local farmers to local food buyers.
Finally, Amy Tabor of Open Harvest Co-op Grocery discussed the benefits of having a farmers co-op. Open harvest is a membership co-op that allows anyone to join for only $25 a year, with equity that builds up over time! In addition to using the co-op as a food distributor, Open Harvest also works as an advocacy and educational center to help support and promote new farmers.
