In the opening presentation, Margie Nichols discussed reasonable accommodations for assistance animals and the impact of COVID-19. She summarized HUD’s updated guidance for assessing reasonable accommodation requests for assistance animals, to include both service animals and support animals. Margie closed by speaking to the rights of tenants impacted by COVID-19 and what landlords can do to help keep their tenants safe from spread of the disease.
Next, Vic Klafter presented on eviction, affordable housing, and COVID-19. He outlined the mission of Nebraska Appleseed and the work of Collective Impact Lincoln, specifically proactive code enforcement, inclusionary zoning, and increased efficacy of vouchers. He provided a timeline of eviction moratoria in Nebraska and went over the criteria that must be met in order to be protected by current orders.

Finally, Abby Swatsworth shared with us OutNebraska’s mission of working for and celebrating Nebraska’s LGBTQIA+ community and talked about the housing discrimination that the community faces. Abby noted that as much as 40 percent of youth experiencing homelessness identify on the LGBTQIA+ spectrum and went on to delve into the impact of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2019 Bostock ruling.
