Sustainable Campus Spotlight

Sustainability Week

During WorldWide Teach-In, AUCA initiated a Sustainability Week during the last week of the March, which consisted of a series of workshops with guest speakers, Make Climate a Class, and sustainability events, including showing videos about climate change from the OSUN network in the forum during the lunch hour every day. From all Teach-In events including workshops (250 people) and Make Climate a Class (52 professors) participated. Sustainability Week includes workshops such as: 1) “Regenerative Practices: Ecovillage Design and Permaculture for Climate Solve Efforts” on March 25th, conceived and developed by Associate Professor Olga Tarabashkina (co-chair of the Sustainability Task Force); 2) Climate Fresk Workshop on March 28th, organized by Sustainability Task Force; 3) Sustainable Environment Workshop on March 30th, organized by the Faculty of Environmental Sustainability and Climatology department; 4) Recycling Workshop on March 31st, organized by the AUCA Center for Civic Engagement and supported by the Kyrgyz-German-Swiss GIZ program "Green Economy and Sustainable Development of the Private Sector in the Kyrgyz Republic". One of the students shared her thoughts after participating in Make Climate a Class “Even though I study the law, I thought the topic of climate change is not relevant for my future profession, but after participating in Make Climate a Class I understood the interconnectedness of all decisions and consequences of lacking the good environmental policies even in private companies”.

AUCA Green Month 🍀

During Green April, as part of the AUCA Green program, the Center for Civic Engagement held several environmental events aimed at developing a more conscious attitude towards purchases and actions, introducing eco-habits and waste management principles into everyday life. These were the 2nd 6R Fest, an eco-tour to an eco-house in the village of Lebedinovka, supported by the Kyrgyz-German-Swiss GIZ program "Green Economy and Sustainable Development of the Private Sector in the Kyrgyz Republic" and check-recycling workshop together with the PAPER2U eco-startup. The events were attended not only by AUCA students, but also by other universities, schoolchildren, teachers, and residents of Bishkek.

Tree Planting at Ecopark 🌱

In 2018, the Bishkek City Hall, the American University of Central Asia and the Franco-Kyrgyz Ecotourism Association (AFKE) signed an agreement on the joint implementation of the Karagachev Grove Ecopark project. A lot has changed over the five years of the project in Karagachev Grove. A 3.5-kilometer-long fence has appeared around the perimeter of the park, video surveillance cameras have been installed and round-the-clock security is working. This made it possible to stop cutting down trees and seizing land.

Of course, the main goal is to restore the ecosystem of the grove. A lot is done in this direction every year. First, the territory of the park was cleared of more than 200 tons of garbage. Second, an inventory of trees was made - there turned out to be almost 10,000. Pheasants and turtles are bred in the park, there is even a hotel for insects. For visitors to the park, paths and bridges across the canals have been laid, benches have been installed and recreation areas have been equipped. And most importantly, several hundred trees and shrubs have been planted every year.

Q&A with Sustainability Experts

Dr Eban Goodstein: Vice President, Environmental and Social Leadership, Director, Graduate Programs in Sustainability, Bard College, New York

Since 2007, I have been leading "coordinated climate education" efforts bringing together educators and students from across different campuses, mostly in the US.  The idea is that we are stronger together. OSUN provided the chance to take this world global and engage thousands of educators at over 350 campuses in 50 countries.

Campuses should commit to net zero carbon targets by 2035, and students should engage with the needed research to determine the most cost-effective options-- from weatherization to geothermal to solar power and electric vehicles to changes in the food system-- needed to rapidly cut climate pollution. The university can be a model for the city, reducing air pollution, improving health outcomes and saving money. Campuses also need to be training the workers needed to decarbonize-- including not only electrical engineers, but also artists and writers, business people and scientists,  farmers and political leaders, who can change the future.

The Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System™ (STARS) is a transparent, self-reporting framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance. STARS® is intended to engage and recognize the full spectrum of higher education institutions, from community colleges to research universities. It encompasses long-term sustainability goals for already high-achieving institutions, as well as entry points of recognition for institutions that are taking their first steps toward sustainability. By participating in STARS, our institution can earn points toward a STARS Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum Rating, or earn the STARS Reporter designation. Each seal represents significant sustainability leadership. The staff will put a lot of effort into gathering data during the summer.  Look for an update in our next newsletter!

AUCA is among the Green Waste Leaders-2023
AUCA has confirmed Best Recycle Practice environmental certification. On May 19, AUCA issued a new certificate of conformity, demonstrating that our university this year for the 2nd time passed voluntary environmental certification in the WasteNet.kg Waste Management Network in the Kyrgyz Republic and confirmed compliance with the ecolabel requirements under the Green AUCA program, which is implemented by the Civic Engagement Center (CCE) AUCA.

Europe Summer Festival: Green Hub

On May 27th AUCA was invited by the Delegation of the European Union in Kyrgyzstan to participate in Europe Summer Fest 2023, in the Green Hub zone, which was held in Yntymak Park 2, in Bishkek. It was a great opportunity to share about AUCA Eco-initiatives, TSI projects, and university performance as a sustainable university with participants of the festival. The festival had Digital, Youth and Green Hubs. Green Hub included eco-initiatives, NGOs, organizations and eco-projects in Kyrgyzstan. The festival allowed many to experience the atmosphere of European culture, trade, cuisine, and music. The events are organized in cooperation with the embassies of Germany, France, Estonia, Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, the Netherlands, Finland, and other European Union member states. AUCA was represented by the Center for Civic Engagement. Within the framework of the Civic Engagement Center, such projects as the AUCA Sustainable Program, the Eco Park Project and the AUCA Green Program were created. Thanks to these initiatives, students collaborated with other institutions, such as the Town Hall of Bishkek, the French-Kyrgyz Ecotourism Association Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education, contribute to the sustainable development of the campus and the preservation of the environment.

Kyrgyzstan Climate Educators Network (KCEN) is a project has been implemented by Bard College in partnership with AUCA, and funded by the US Embassy.

🎯 The goal of the project is to develop a Kyrgyz national network of climate educators at universities, high schools, and NGOs.
As part of this project mini-grants were provided for NGOs and students of schools and universities. Check them out here.
