Microbiology

2024 is the Year of Lab Efficiency in Micro division, aiming for enhancing labor efficiency, reducing workflow complexity, and improving throughput and speed.

Lab Efficiency in Virology Section: Converting manual multi-step low-throughput Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays to fully automated high-throughput platform (Roche Cobas 6800/8800 for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and BK polyomavirus (BKV) viral load tests and FluA/B & Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) PCR tests).

Lab Efficiency in Bacti Section: Converting culture-based labor-intensive and time-consuming tests to high-throughput rapid molecular tests (Laboratory developed tests for Legionella PCR and Nocardia PCR).

Lab Efficiency in NGS Section: converting manual multi-step NGS library prep to fully automated system (Tecan MagicPrep); save one day of labor per run and allow workflow flexibility.

Transfusion Medicine

Blood Bank

  • Implemented new/revised MTP protocols, including a new blood product, Intercept Fibrinogen Concentrate (IFC), which is maintained thawed in each blood bank for immediate release for obstetric patients requiring massive transfusion.
  • Implemented the new Blood Transfusion Report that allow physicians, nurses, and clinical staff to easily and efficiently see a consolidated view of a patient's Type and Screen/Check Type status, Last Type and Screen Result, Blood Bank Test results, relevant Lab Results, links to Transfusion Policy and Consent Policy documents and Blood Consent/Refusal documents from the Chart, transfusion and transfusion reaction history. Example below (click to enlarge).

  • Published the 2024-2026 edition of the “Transfusion Medicine Pocket Reference” with the addition of our first Clinical Laboratory Pocket Reference. These pocket references contain important information on blood bank tests, transfusion products, transfusion reactions and blood bank protocols, as well as specimen collection information. They are distributed to nursing and housestaff. Hard copies are available from the RR Blood Bank. Examples below (click to enlarge).

Blood & Platelet Center
  • UCLA Blood & Platelet Center implemented an initiative to perform full RBC phenotype on donors who self-identify as African American to support RBC phenotype-matching needs for patients with sickle cell disease.

Faculty Updates

Dr. Zhen Mei and Dr. Vivian Chang (Peds Heme-Onc), were awarded a grant from the American Society of Hematology (ASH) to help set Absolute Neutrophil Count (ANC) reference ranges for Duffy-null individuals.

Patients with Duffy Associated Neutrophil Count (DANC) often get labeled with and worked up for neutropenia, resulting in unnecessary medical procedures, exclusion from clinical trials, and mental stress. Many of these patients are of African or Middle Eastern background whereas the current absolute neutrophil count (ANC) ranges are based on individuals of European or Asian descent. Addressing this with an appropriate reference range will help reduce the amount of systemic racism and inappropriate care decisions that this patient cohort faces. Congratulations, Dr. Mei and Dr. Chang!

Dr. Dawn Ward was selected to serve as the Secretary for the California Blood Bank Society (CBBS) for FY25. Congratulations, Dr. Ward!

Dr. Alyssa Ziman was honored by the California Blood Bank Society (CBBS) with the 2024 Dennis Goldfinger Award for Excellence in Clinical Transfusion Medicine! The distinction is awarded to a transfusion medicine physician who "consistently demonstrated one or more of the following throughout their career: dedication to clinical practice of transfusion medicine, commitment to training of future transfusion medicine physicians and/or leader in bringing about innovative changes to the field." Congratulations, Dr. Ziman!

Aerin Rose Glaser Pediatric Sarcoma Research Symposium

UCLA Health and the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center hosted the Aerin Rose Glaser Pediatric Sarcoma Research Symposium on November 11, 2024 at the Luskin Conference Center. Department attendees included Dr. Sarah Dry and Dr. Yazhen Zhu.

The Glaser Family Pediatric Sarcoma Fund was established in honor and memory
of Aerin Rose Glaser. The fund supports research in the UCLA Division of Pediatric
Hematology and Oncology, under the direction of Dr. Noah Federman, toward better
understanding and treatment of pediatric sarcomas.

The UCLA Sarcoma Liquid Biopsy Team (from left to right, Dr. Steven Jonas, Dr. Yazhen Zhu, Dr. Sarah Dry, Dr. Noah Federman, and Dr. Hsian-Rong Tseng) presented groundbreaking advancements in pediatric sarcoma diagnostics. Their innovative work focuses on personalized, noninvasive detection and monitoring of pediatric sarcomas using extracellular vesicles (EVs). The team has developed pioneering technologies to capture and analyze EVs by profiling cancer-specific biomarkers– including mRNA, protease activity, and surface proteins such as B7H3. These advancements enable noninvasive diagnosis and treatment monitoring for sarcomas like Ewing sarcoma, osteosarcoma, and rhabdomyosarcoma.

Grants, Publications, & National Recognition

Congratulations to Dr. Ting Zhang (Neuropath Fellow and first author) and collaborators on their article published in Nature Aging "Brain-wide alterations revealed by spatial transcriptomics and proteomics in COVID-19 infection."

Department collaborators include Yunfeng Li, Kazu Williams, Dr. Shino Magaki, Chao Niu, Yoojin Lee, Yu-chyuan Su, Dr. Xinmin Li, and Dr. Harry Vinters.

The study examined cortical and subcortical regions in postmortem brains from COVID-19 patients and controls (n=42) using spatial transcriptomics, bulk gene expression, and proteomics. They found a widespread antiviral response without direct SARS-CoV-2 infection, alongside dysregulation of mitochondrial and synaptic pathways in deep-layer excitatory neurons, and increased neuroinflammation in glial cells. These changes were similar to those observed in age-related neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Their findings highlight the brain-wide effects of severe COVID-19 and suggest potential therapeutic targets linked to neurodegeneration and aging.

Dr. Wayne Grody and colleague, Dr. Terri Getzug (Gastroenterology), were featured in UCLA Health News regarding Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF). FMF is a genetic disorder characterized by painful inflammation. Drs. Wayne Grody and Terri Getzug lead UCLA Health's unique FMF clinic that is the only one of it's kind in Western hemisphere.
