This symposium is to promote and enhance the work of scholars conducting research in the areas of race and ethnic politics in and around the DC metropolitan area (Maryland, DC, and Virginia). Over the past decade, academic and other institutions in this region have seen a critical mass of researchers working at the intersection of these scholarly areas, but with few opportunities to engage with each other's work. In the current racialized political environment, it is more important than ever to spotlight meaningful research on issues that affect the lives of racial and ethnic minorities in the United States and around the world. This annual symposium will bring together DC area scholars to present their work, receive meaningful feedback, and to identify potential synergistic collaborative opportunities.

The symposium will take place on August 1st, 2019 at the University of Maryland. It will be an all-day conference, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided to participants. If you are interested in presenting some of your research, please submit a title and abstract of the paper below. And if you know a graduate student in your department who would interested in presenting, have them submit as well. Our goal is to have several panels around various themes tackling issues specific to racial and ethnic minorities. If you are interested in being a discussant as opposed to presenting a paper, please indicate this in the form below.
