Campbell Scribner Comments on Joe Biden, Kamala Harris Exchange on Busing

Assistant Professor Campbell Scribner was featured in an article in USA Today following night two of the Democratic presidential primary debate in which former Vice President Joe Biden sparred with Senator Kamala Harris over federally-mandated busing.
Federally-mandated busing is intended to create integrated public school systems by providing transportation to students to schools in or outside their local school districts. During the exchange, Harris questioned Biden’s record on the issue, while he defended his opposition to federally-mandated busing and cited his previous experience on civil rights issues as a whole.
Dr. Scribner tagged Biden's response as "tone-deaf" and "ham-handed,” and defended Harris’ criticism of the former vice president.
"I wouldn't have found (Biden's defense) convincing in the 1970s, and I think he did not do a good job of explaining how he’s thinking about that issue differently now,” Dr. Scribner is quoted in the article.
Dr. Scribner has research interests in educational policy, history and philosophy. He is the author of the book The Fight for Local Control: Schools, Suburbs, and American Democracy.
