Dr. Radermacher Named Operating Agent of IEA Annex 53

Dr. Reinhard Radermacher, along with Van Baxter of Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), was named co-operating agent of International Energy Agency’s (IEA) HPT Annex 53 project, which officially kicked off on January 11, 2019 at the ASHRAE conference in Atlanta, Georgia. South Korea, Germany, and Sweden are participating countries along with the United States.

Global energy consumption is projected to increase three times the amount of present use in the next 30 to 40 years for refrigeration, space cooling and dehumidification. The goal of Annex 53 is to assist in developing solutions to address the upcoming demand.

According to the Annex’s statement of purpose, it will accomplish this by, “maximizing use of existing state-of-the-art (SOA) technologies, establishment of or increases in minimum efficiency standards, etc. Annex 53 is focused on longer-term RD&D to further development of advanced technology solutions for cooling and refrigeration applications, both advanced vapor compression and non-traditional cycles/systems.”

"The Annex enhances collaboration among its member countries to accelerate development of heat pump technologies.” Dr. Radermacher said. “The technologies will go beyond today's state-of-art to meet future heating and cooling demand with increased energy efficiency and less environmental impact"
