Soheil Feizi, an assistant professor of computer science with an appointment in the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies, was recently awarded a Simons-Berkeley Research Fellowship to attend an 11-week program that explores the foundations of deep learning.

The fellowship—from the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at the University of California, Berkeley—is very competitive, with the institute offering approximately 16 fellowships each year to exceptional young scientists.

Foundations of Deep Learning” runs from May 23–August 9. The goal of the program, organizers say, is to align theoretical and applied researchers on the common purpose of building empirically-relevant theoretical foundations of deep learning.

Feizi’s research spans various theoretical and practical aspects of machine learning. He says he looks forward to enhancing collaborations between the University of Maryland and other top universities during his stay in California.
