Instagram Stories clone now more popular than Snapchat

SAN FRANCISCO — Instagram's Snapchat clone is only eight months old but it's so popular that it has already overtaken Snapchat.

Facebook says 200 million people now use Instagram Stories every day. That's up from 150 million daily users that Instagram announced in January.

For a bit of perspective: Instagram Stories now has more users than all of Snapchat. That growing competitive threat from Facebook cast a shadow over parent company Snap's initial public offering in March.

As of the fourth quarter of 2016, Snapchat had around 160 million daily users.

Facebook-owned photo-sharing app Instagram, which has more than 600 million users, launched its Stories feature in August.

Snap spurned a $3 billion plus buyout offer from Facebook in 2013. Not able to acquire what it wanted, Facebook and its apps including Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger have set out to recreate it, rolling out a series of Stories knockoffs.

Instagram also announced other Snapchat-like features on Thursday including selfie stickers, sticker pinning for videos and four new cities, Chicago, London, Madrid and Toyko, for its custom Geostickers feature. The Geostickers feature launched last month in Jakarta and New York City.

These updates are available in the Instagram version 10.16 for iOS in the Apple App Store and version 10.16.1 for Android in Google Play.
