Smith Team in Finals of U.S. Chamber Foundation’s Inaugural MBA Case Competition

Smith Team in Finals of U.S. Chamber Foundation’s Inaugural MBA Case Competition

A team of MBA students from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business will compete in the final round of the U.S. Chamber Foundation’s Inaugural MBA Case Competition, in partnership with FedEx Freight, on Nov. 3, 2016, in Washington, D.C.

The competition is designed to be a forum for MBA students to explore the connection between business success and corporate social responsibility. The four finalists were selected from 34 teams from 12 universities. Winners will receive national recognition and a share of prize money. The finalists are:

  • Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland
  • Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University
  • McDonough School of Business, Georgetown University
  • Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University

“At the U.S. Chamber Foundation we believe in the power of American business and its potential to create opportunity, strengthen communities and drive solutions,” said Carolyn Cawley, president of the U.S. Chamber Foundation. “These MBA students represent the next generation of American business leaders. The goal of this competition is to give students an opportunity to take the skills they are learning in business school and apply them to solving a corporate citizenship challenge.”

“FedEx Freight is proud to play a key role in making this competition possible,” said Sean Healy, senior vice president of strategic planning and engineering for FedEx Freight. “FedEx truly believes that when we support communities where we operate and serve, those communities flourish and thrive. So it makes perfect sense for us to be involved with a program that is encouraging future business leaders to embrace the same mindset.”

Smith student Alison Scharman, MBA Candidate 2017, said, "We had a great time preparing our recommendations to enter the competition and feel so honored to be chosen to compete against teams from such impressive MBA programs. The most valuable piece of preparing for the competition has been having the opportunity to work with my fellow teammates - we had never worked together this closely prior to now and I continually find myself in awe with how talented they are and how well we work together!"

The final round of competition will be held at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 3 where finalists will present their case solution to a panel of judges and winners will be selected.

This event is free and open to the public. Please attend to cheer on our Smith Terps!
